The present invention relates to an antenna and, more particularly, to an adaptive antenna apparatus using a neural network which provides adaptive behavior to a wireless transmission system.
2. Description of the Related Art
A Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system is a spread spectrum communication system that uses the spread spectrum code modulation technique and is widely used in cellular and personal wireless communications systems.
An adaptive antenna system uses an adaptive array antenna to combine the signals of a plurality of elements and thereby improve the antenna gain and performance.
In a typical adaptive array antenna system, an adaptive weighting process is performed to achieve a desired antenna pattern. More specifically, as shown in FIG. 1, a base station 10 transmits a signal to a mobile station 12 by way of a two-way channel. A base station signal processor 11 applies a weighting process to the transmitted signal from the base station 10 and then transmits the weighted signal to a mobile station 12.
The base station signal processor 11 applies a weighting process to the signal received from the base station 10, and transmits the processed signal to the mobile station 12.
The mobile station 12 applies a weighting process to the signal received from the base station 10 and then transmits the weighted signal to the base station signal processor 11.
The base station signal processor 11 and the mobile station 12 each use an adaptive antenna apparatus 14 and a controller 15 to perform the adaptive weighting process.
Typically, the adaptive antenna apparatus 14 performs an adaptive control by iterative calculations. The weighting process described above is an example of such an iterative calculation.
Each antenna in the adaptive antenna apparatus 14 includes a plurality of elements that can be a plurality of antennas or a single antenna. As such, each element in the adaptive antenna apparatus 14 can be arranged in a number of different ways.
The elements of the adaptive antenna apparatus 14 may be arranged linearly. Such an arrangement is typically called a "linear array" or an "interleaved array."
Alternatively, the elements of the adaptive antenna apparatus 14 may be arranged in a uniform circular pattern, called a "radial antenna."
Also, the adaptive antenna apparatus 14 can include an array formed by arranging a number of elements in an interlaced fashion in a single direction or by arranging a number of elements in an interlaced fashion in a ac619d1d87
